Medical History: Normal Childhood Illnesses
Background Information: Born Robert F. Karo grew up in a small south Louisiana town. As a child he was always interested in going out into the woods and swamps to hunt, fish, camp, whatever was available in that particular season. He was raised not only by his parents but also his grandparents who lived next door. It was his grandfather who would take him into the outdoors while his father would tend to his small practice. In 2394 Karo enrolled at the University of Louisiana with a pre-med major. During his sophomore year he began dating his future fiance. She would soon enroll at Starfleet Academy. A year later, shortly after they were engaged, she died in a training accident. He had come to call her his beloved, Imzadi his mother's peoplewould say. Although he fell into a depression, he completed his studies and graduated in the top 80% of his class.
With the state of inter-stellar affairs and the memory of his Imzadi swaying him, Karo applied to Starfleet Medical Academy. He managed (with some political backing of a family friend) to get accepted on his first try and graduated as a newly minted Lieutenant (junior grade) in 2400. Karo did his first tour and completed his residency aboard the USS Pasteur. He served admirably in his first posting and was present at a few of the defining moments of the time before the Third Federation-Klingon War. Accepting a position as an attending physician at the Starfleet infirmary located at Port Shangri-la, Cestus III along with a promotion to Lieutenant. It was there he was first tapped as an asset by Starfleet Intel.
Starting in 2403, Karo began being assigned to a number of temporary duty assignments treating victims caught between the battling Klingon and Gorn fleets. Besides his normal duties treating the sick and injured, he was able to gather bits of stategic intel from the the refugees. These "routine" rotations into the frontier regions faced many hazards as the Nausicaans seemed to honor Federation neutrality in the conflict when it was convienent to them.
Karo continued to serve at Port Shangri-la with intermitent rotations to Starship duty as he was needed. That is, until war finally broke out. Karo requested a transfer to a frontline hospital ship. He was assigned to one of the field hospital teams operating out of the Olympic-class USS Mercy. On his last deployment with the Mercy, Karo's unit was attacked by Klingon forces and suffered heavy casualties, Karo among them. He was evacuated back to Federation space and placed on limited duty. Karo was reassigned as a Starfleet Medical Liason to the Diplomatic Corps. After being shuffled around he ended up in the Federation Embassy on Cardassia Prime. There, he advised the Federation Ambassador and resumed his work with Starfleet Intel, eventually working as a case officer.
Once the war ended, Karo retired back home to Earth. He arrieved home and wanted to live a quiet life. An elderly uncle who wished to retire offered Karo his small business, a bait shop in Karo's home town. Appreciating the opportunity, he accepted. A quiet life was not in the cards.
Not long after Karo started to feel bored with the entire enterprise. Luckily he had it managed well enough to leave the day to day operation to one of his younger cousins. Karo soon found a new life as a private investigator working out of New Orleans. Soon, one of his cases drew the attention of an organized crime bos by the name of Lex Luthor. Fearing for his life Karo went underground. Utilizing his wartime contacts he was able to move from one location to another until he could reach Deep Space Nine. Once he was far outside Sol sector, Luthor let up. While the immeadiate threat was lessened, he decided Earth still wasn't safe for the time being moved his office onto DS9's promenade.
Psychological Profile:
Overview: Dr Robert Karo is a strong willed individual with a great amount of life experience. While he's spent the majority of his adult life off of Earth he's quick to claim being "a simple, country man." One of his favorite pastimes is hunting, an activity that is looked upon as almost barbaric by most of today's society but tolerated in his native Louisiana. He's familiar with many authors, is fond of cooking, and is comfortable in settings as far ranging as swamps to formal balls.

Vices: He's known to drink, but never in excess, and is a known gambler. He began smoking at the beginning of the Third Federation-Klingon War. (Quoted as saying, "I'll quit when the war ends, at this rate tobacco isn't what'll kill me." As of 2421, he's yet to quit.) Hasn't had a lasting romantic relationship since the death of his fiancé
